Job description

Origin Materials is seeking an individual with a strong Chemistry background with technical writing expertise who can cultivate an ever-growing IP portfolio. This person will work with company scientists, technical management and patent counsel to carve out, manage and maintain the portfolio according to the company’s business strategy.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

IP Strategy

  • Develop and maintain the company’s IP strategy according to the core business strategy
  • Assess the patent IP landscape, provide strategies for infringement avoidance and freedom to operate, and assist in the development of “engineer around options”
  • Devise and implement differing IP protection strategies for different technologies
  • Search patent information databases relating to new inventions and development projects

 

Patent Drafting

  • Interface with chemists and engineers to identify inventions or concepts and then broaden them in support of a layered claim strategy
  • Manage and assess IP disclosures. Locate the “white space” within the IP landscape in which an invention will sit, and dictate how that invention will impact the overall IP strategy
  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications, including the management and supervision of outside counsel
  • Manage the existing patent portfolio, supporting prosecution needs, meeting document deadlines, and working with patent counsel to fulfill the company’s IP strategy decisions
  • Regularly review the patent portfolio for the purpose of retaining only that of value and in accordance with the IP strategy

Requirements

Desired Background:

  • BS degree in chemistry (PhD in chemistry a significant bonus)
  • Degree, certification, or significant experience with U.S. and/or foreign intellectual property law
  • Considerable experience writing scientific literature reviews
  • Experience with search tools and databases (such as Sci-finder), forward/reverse citation analysis, and chemical structure searching experience
  • Experience with patent searching using the U.S. and international patent classification systems
  • Experience working within an R&D environment

  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Outstanding communications skills, both written and oral
  • Familiarity with the USPTO and PCT patent prosecution process
